Electric Blanket Testing at Age Concern Eastbourne

Eastbourne Rotary Club sponsored Age Concern Eastbourne's Electric Blanket testing day on Fri the 11 Oct. Fifty three people had their blankets checked by a specialist health and safety service and over half of them were found to be faulty - the blankets that is, not the people.

Those blankets that were found to be unsafe were taken away to be destroyed but the older person was given a free blanket as a replacement.

One lady's blanket was nearly 40 years old  a fact which only occurred to her when she remembered that she  had bought it before she was married - 35 years ago!

Nearly 1000 fires are caused by faulty electric blankets every year and without Rotary support, together with Lawson Lewis Solicitors and Wiltshire Farm Foods, Eastbourne residents would have had to go to Lewes or Hailsham to get their blankets checked.

Everybody who turned up at Age Concern Eastbourne was given practical advice on how to look after their blankets, how to store them and when to switch them on and off.

It was an extremely successful day particularly as other local providers of services for older people had exhibition stands at the Venton Centre. The Hearing Resource Centre, the Police, Health Services and Care for the Carers were all there to answer questions and promote their services.
